Realizing The Vision
Realizing the internet vision requires changing
one's thinking about information technology. The
technical world of today is different from the
world of only two years ago.
There are two critical aspects changing
the information technology world. These
are: dynamic changes in driving forces and speed.
In the past business requirements drove information
technology development. Today information technology
is the dynamic force driving business.
The internet was not
created by a business requirement - it emerged
independently. It is now critically important
for business to determine how to
make the best use of this technology.
The need for speed is a real dilemma. On the
one hand we have the accelerating pace of technology
innovation. It seems that hardly a month goes by
without Sun adding new capabilities to Java that
can impact the internet and eCommerce. On the
other hand we have the need to quickly upgrade
legacy systems to keep up with the accelerating pace
of technology. There is simply not enough time to
solve this dilemma by rewriting
legacy systems from scratch. By the time
the rewrite is completed the new system will be
obsolete.
How does the modern information
technology department cope
with these constraints? A new method must
be found to solve these problems. This new
method must be automated to provide
the speed to do the transformation timely.
It must involve
Java, because Java is the language of the internet.
It must implement and enforce widely accepted
standards, both to enable
business to easily communicate
with other businesses and customers, and to make it
easier to implement new technologies as they
emerge. Finally, it must be flexible to
encompass and take advantage of the constantly
changing internet.
To realize the internet vision requires a
modernization method that is fast, involves Java,
implements accepted standards, and is flexible.
The Legacy
eTrans-FormationTM
Service is just such a modernization method.
